Welcome to Fairburn Village This site is dedecated to providing information for the local villagers of Fairburn. Fairburn is still a relatively small village with approximately 360 homes and 760 residents and is located in the County of North Yorkshire. It was formally came under the administration of the Osgolcross council until it was abloished. Since that time is has formed part of the Selby District and the Selby Parliamentary Constituency. Fairburn is situated on the western edge of a limestone ridge overlooking the river Aire. The river has always been the traditional boundry between North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. The meadows adjoining the river Aire have subsided due to the coal workings and now form the Fairburn Ings RSPB Nature Reserve. It is an old village and was formerly bounded by the Al trunk road, but since 1930 two new estates have been built on the eastern side of the Al. The A1 has now been diverted around the village, but a road still replaces the A1 with most of the public building, post office, and school located within the older part. News The Parish Council News Letter is now online - Click here to view or click on our News Letter link to the left.
Mr Alistair Snart from RMS gave a briefing at the parish council meeting last night. In order to secure the police agreement to the reduction of the speed limit to 40 mph (the parish council has been lobbying for an even lower one), some compromises have had to be made. The limit will remain just north of the northern roundabout, but will finish opposite the community centre, where it will become a 60 mph limit. The road will also be narrowed by a central hatching and a marked cycleway. There is no possibility of a pelican crossing. On 4 October a speed survey will take place. If the 85 percentile speed is less than 35 mph, a zebra crossing will be installed near Gauk Street. If 85% of vehicles travel at more than 35 mph, then it will be deemed too dangerous to have a zebra crossing. Although the speed limit is 40 mph, PLEASE DRIVE BELOW 35 mph ON 4 OCTOBER, so that Fairburn can have a safe crossing Very Important - Raw Sewage Contamination. Keep your doors and windows closed. Don't go into the village unless you must. Clean up crew is being organised - Saturday 7th October 2006 |
